Site Compatibility
Welcome to the Rot3K: Graphics and Web Design site compatibility page. Because this site uses modern technologies that are not supported by all browsers, we have decided to offer explanation regarding what works and what doesn’t work. Not only can this give you, the viewer, an idea of what browsers offer good support for Internet technologies, it can also provide other Web designers with a clear picture of whether or not technologies used in this site are good for their own projects.
That aside, I would like to point out that our site content should be accessible to any Internet-browsing device or program. Although some layout features and options will obviously only function in modern browsers, even Lynx and Netscape 1.0 should be able to browse the site without difficulty.

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5.0 and higher for both Windows and Macintosh should fully support this
site and its features. If you encounter feature, layout, or accessibility issues using these
browsers please contact me.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5.x and below for Windows will not attempt to display this site’s layout. Instead, they will revert to a basic heading, paragraph, and image display, which will look something like this (no layout formatting preview). This is done because these browsers do not properly support CSS2 positioning, something on which this site depends for layout display. The ability to toggle visibility in the menus will be disabled (because these browsers do not support the JavaScript DOM), but functional direct links will be accessible and easy to find.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5.x for Macintosh will attempt to load the site layout, which may cause difficulties. All content will be accessible, but the site will not be attractive. If you are using this browser we highly suggest you upgrade, your computer supports all the modern browsers.
Netscape Navigator and Communicator
Netscape
Navigator 6.0 and higher for both Windows and Macintosh should fully support this site and
its features. If you encounter feature, layout, or accessibility issues using these browsers
please contact me.

Mozilla
The
vast majority of 0.8 Mozilla browsers and beyond should fully support this site, its layout,
and its features. Because so many sub-versions were available at different stages in development
it is possible minor issues may be encountered, but unlikely. If this happens please report
it to me (with a screenshot if possible) and upgrade
to the latest Mozilla build (which we know to fully support this site).
Opera
Opera
6b2, the most recent version of this browser at the time of writing, fully supports our layout
and displays text properly. It is still suffering from incomplete DOM
implementation though, and for this reason still cannot access show/hide features. We suspect
this capability will be added before or in the final release though. See below for details.
Opera 5.0.x for both Windows and Macintosh fully support this site’s layout, but there are some minor issues. These versions of Opera do not properly display fonts that were defined in pixels, shrinking the display size by around 30% (which may make the site difficult to read). Fortunately the solution is simple; there is a page zoom option in the tool bar, set it to around 120% to 130% and site display should be normal. This bug was resolved in Opera 6b1.
Opera 5.0.x is also incapable of using the text show/hide features used on some pages and in the navigation bar (due to incomplete implementation of the JavaScript DOM). This capability is not required though, you may still use the main links to navigate and the search option is available from the home page. Additionally, pages on this site that require the show/hide feature to access content will also be available in a backward-compatible format.
Opera 4.x and below will suffer from the problems mentioned above and may also fail to render some site CSS properly. The layout may not be too attractive, but all content should still be accessible. We suggest you upgrade to the latest version of Opera or use Mozilla/Internet Explorer instead; these old Opera browsers are no longer suitable for a pleasant Internet-browsing experience.
K-Meleon and Chimera
![]()
K-Meleon,
Chimera, and any other Gecko rendering engine-based browsers that may emerge in the future
should support the site as well as Mozilla itself. If you are going to use one of these third-party
Gecko browsers we suggest you maintain the latest version for proper compliance and site support
(in all honesty it is probably better to use Mozilla itself instead unless specific browser
features appeal to you). If you do encounter any problems though, please contact
us with your browser version and a screenshot so we can look into it.
Omniweb
Omniweb
4.1.x and higher support enough CSS to display
Rot3K: Graphics and Web Design in an attractive and readable manner, which is good. There
are more than a few spacing issues, and it has trouble displaying some of the eye candy effects,
but all in all there are no serious layout problems.
Unfortunately, however, Omniweb still poorly implements the JavaScript DOM and cannot display the show/hide content. You can still access everything using direct links or alternate pages (as is the case with a few pages on this site that require DOM support to access content). So once again, there are no debilitating problems.
Although we are fond of Omniweb and the company behind it, Omnigroup, we feel this browser, at this time, is too far behind the current leaders (Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Mozilla) to warrant use. Although this site, as strange as it sounds, is rendered reasonably well (we were honestly surprised) Omniweb makes serious mistakes with many other sites on the Internet. They have announced the goal of eventual full support of CSS2 and the DOM, but until things improve we suggest choosing an alternate browser.
If you are using anything older than the 4.1.x releases you will still be able to fully access site content, but numerous issues that will regularly crop up on sites across the Internet are present. We advise you upgrade to the latest version of Omniweb or select an alternate browser until the Omnigroup adds more functionality to this browser.
iCab
iCab
2.8.2 is able to read all of this sites style sheets which would be a good thing if it was
actually advanced enough to implement them. Unfortunately, iCab is far too inferior a browser
to pull this off. The menu hovers in the upper left side with excessive spacing, but all links
remain functional. The main content pages are places properly horizontally, but vertically
they are dropped below the menu (which is completely wrong).
DOM support is basically nonexistent so you cannot access show/hide content, but as always this won’t prevent you from reading anything. The situation remains the same with older installations. The layout gets a little more garbled, but everything remains accessible. Basically, this browser doesn’t cut the butter on this site or many others, we suggest you upgrade to another standards-compliant browser, iCab has a long way to go before it catches up.
