Update Archives – 7/12/01-8/26/01

Presenting a complete list of all site updates for the dates of 7/12/01 to 8/26/01. Please click here to return to news and update archives home page.

7/12/01: Some sitewide CSS improvements have been made along with other minor errors that have been located in the last week. Regular updates will occur when the site gains listing in some popular search engines.

8/7/01: [local update only]

I have started preparing the new page design for fall. I will keep this new look until October when I will design an appropriate theme for the best holiday of the year. With the fall theme comes a significant overhaul of the site. I am taking care of code errors that I dismissed earlier and further improving the compatibility of the sites CSS. This update will also make sure that the whole site displays properly in Opera, eliminating some visual errors, all CSS related. (as a result of me trying to get compatibility with some older browsers.) What to expect with this? I am no longer worrying about how this page looks in old Netscape browsers as long as it is readable. If you don’t like this, get a CSS enabled (sure, Netscape 4.x _says_ it works here, but it really doesn’t) browser like the latest version of Opera or Internet Explorer.

Designed and implemented most images and colors used in the new theme.

Dropped the Wizzard font – looked horrible in Windows – along with most other defined fonts used. There is now only one defined font for the site, and that is the new body font, Technical. I will make it available for download on a future update. The new font really looks good.

CSS no longer defines a set font size. I changed everything to percentages based off the body font, whose size the user now defines.

Fonts are now underlined again, to avoid confusion that may result with the new theme colors.

Started work on the CGI search script (it needs to write a lot of HTML, so there is extra work to do there too).

Started preparing some tutorials that were requested (they will come after the site appearance update).

Introduced a few new bugs to the appearance, some of which I will fix, others I will not (for example; the ones affecting Netscape 4.x viewers).

8/8/01: New theme now in place.

Created new title images. They are now smaller (in file size) and use transparency so they will probably be more attractive as well.

Tweaked the colors used on the page to make things look a little more pleasing.

Identified a page display error in Mac IE5 that appears in the sub links directories and the browser downloads pages. This will be corrected on the next update.

Finished the reconstruction of CSS used on the splash page and throughout the site for perfect compatibility with Opera and Netscape 6.x. There are still a few issues with the browser downloads table that appears on many of the pages. This will be fixed on one of the next updates.

Moved all of June’s work to the first archive file, which can be found at the bottom of this page.

Some additional work is planned on this front page such as relevant content in the right margin, asthetics, and a functional search engine. The first two will be completed soon, the search engine will be up as soon as there is some content to justify searching for.

TheCounter.com ended their formerly wonderful service and they now only offer the big ugly counter you see on this page now. I have not decided what to do about that yet. At this time SSI are not enabled, so I go outside for my stats and informtaion. I may take membership with TheCounter.com, or i may not give money to anyone at all.

New site theme and changes uploaded. There is still some work to be done, but for the most part everything is better off than before. When I am done with the changes listed above content will become the primary focus of this site.

8/9/01: Added ufcws.org’s meta tag and images to the splash page. Yes, we are ‘licensed’.

The visual error in IE5 Mac mentioned earlier has been corrected all through the site.

Removed some sections that are no longer used and fixed some broken links that slipped by in the browser downloads page.

Some minor visual tweaks sitewide. I am nearly happy with the page’s appearance in all browsers. Pretty good considering all browsers use the same page versions.

Updated the summarized browser upgrade table that appears one the splash page among others. It was the last item on the web site that disagreed with Opera. If you discover anything that looks wrong please notify the webmaster so it too can be updated.

8/14/01: Updated all information regarding browser versions and download links in the site.

Updated reviews regarding current browsers on the browser downloads page.

Encountered a new visual bug in Mozilla 0.9.3. Because it only occurs online and not when I am viewing the page locally, It may take a while to resolve... if I ever decide to. I am not fond of watching a browser take a step backwards after already working out a CSS issue.

Located a few more CSS issues that appear in the new Mozilla build. They will all be corrected soon.

8/15/01: Updated the Links page and added a Valuable Resources section that includes some of the most useful sites on the Internet.

Created the News Archive section.

8/16/01: I decided to work on the search engine sooner than previously stated. In order to make it work I had to translate all of the HTML used on the page to Perl (not terribly hard using Dreamweaver’s Find and Replace function) and then this is the hard part; I had to move all of the files used in the frames versions of the page to their own new directory so I could exclude them from the NoFrames searches and visa versa. Again, not terribly hard thanks to Dreamweaver’s Link Update features, but it may have created some errors. I can see none in Dreamweaver’s Check Links Sitewide function, but I am not writing all problems off yet. Time will tell. For now the search engine is up on the NoFrames version only. The Frames versions will receive a search engine shortly after the NoFrames is completed as that will be a simple case of deleting code and making a few mods. I am already almost done with most of this.

Wrote 80% of the Perl/HTML for the NoFrames search engine .CGI script.

Uploaded, set permissions for, linked to, and enabled the search engine in the NoFrames version only.

Moved all Frames page versions to a new directory while updating all links relative to them sitewide.

Repaired a broken image link in the CSS Frameset [now offline] menu, repaired some broken image links in the NoFrames home page’s preload images section, and fixed a few links that should have been opening in a new window and were not.

Next Update: Search functionality under Frames versions, improved page titles for more intuitive searching.

8/26/01: Minor updates to most pages in the site. These updates will probably have no effect on how the page looks at this time, but instead they will do their part to insure compliance with future web browsers HTML/CSS rendering capabilities.

Look for a completed search engine and info section on the next update.
