Update Archives – 6/10/01-6/30/01

Presenting a complete list of all site updates for the dates of 6/10/01 to 6/30/01. Please click here to return to news and update archives home page.

6/10/01: [site off-line]

Professional hosting is arranged with Kenny at hektik.org and this page’s graphics were started in Photoshop.

6/12/01: [site off-line]

Rot3K graphics are completed, split into parts, and put together with a table to serve as this sites navigation bars. Shell for site is constructed and the html for the main page is completed.

FTP information with hektik.org is set up and uploads can begin.

6/13/01: [site off-line]

Index page is completed and I am preparing for upload.

DoaE kongming.net/doae/, formerly rot3k.hektik.org has been updated and prepared for upload.

Section progress table (up and to the right) added to help me (and maybe you) keep track of this pages progress. I will eventually use it to keep track of recent changes.

6/18/01: [site off-line] Page title graphics were prepared for each of the sections and added.

Three variations of my resume were completed along with all html, JavaScript, and graphics used in the ‘Resume’ section.

The whole ‘Resume’ section is complete and all relative files are complete.

Site will be uploaded when ‘No Content’ pages are prepared for the rest of the sections and the Destiny of an Emperor page will be moved to http://kongming.net/doae/.

6/19/01: Began work on the ‘Links’ section finishing content relating to ‘Graphics’ and ‘ Software’.

Headers for all sections besides ‘Home’ and ‘Links’ were completed and turned into templates for future management.

index.html files were created for all sections besides ‘Home’ and ‘Links’.

Destiny of an Emperor was deleted and moved to http://kongming.net/doae/ so this site could be uploaded.

6/20/01: Made some additions to the ‘Links/Web Design’ section.

Updated the Style Sheet to display the page better. I am using the Wizzard font for links. This is the same font that I used in both menus. If you enjoy visiting the site, or if you like the font, please download it. Mac users (wizzard.sit), Windows users (wizzard.zip or self-extracting wizzard.exe) [font links offline]. If anyone knows who made this font please tell us. It is on nearly every free font download site on the ‘net, but none of them say who the author is. Even though the font is apparently ‘free’ I would still like to get permission from the author.

The site now meets more of the standards set forth by W3C.

The Document Type Definition that most of this site conforms to causes the page to display improperly in Mozilla. I was originally going to forget about it (why should I care about Mozilla if they can’t even meet W3C’s most basic standards), but I decided to find a work around. Removing the second half of the DTD allowed the page to display properly, so I went ahead and did it. The proper tag is listed below and the part that I could not use is in italics.

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">

6/21/01: Registered with http://www.icra.org/ so I don’t get ousted by rightfully concerned parents. This is something we should all do. If content on a site is inappropriate, or deemed inappropriate by a child’s parents, we should support their decision to regulate access to it.

Added meta tags to appropriate pages to ease the process of submitting the web site to search engines, something that will happen soon.

6/22/01: Registered with http://www.safesurf.com/. for the same reasons that I registered with ICRA.

Added the Privacy Agreement.

Completed all meta data and started sending the page to search engines.

Updated the footer library item (the file that I update to change the footer on all pages) to use CSS instead of the font tag so it is compliant with strict HTML 4.0.1 and XHTML. They should have been the last font tags in the whole site. If you find any pelase let me know so I can kill them off too.

Added a counter to share with http://kongming.net/doae/

Submitted Site to Google and AltaVista.

6/24/01: Completed a section that includes buttons for linking to this site. View it here.

Completed two alternate versions of the whole site in about 6 hours work time. I am using Library items in Dreamweaver so all I have to so is update one file and it changes all of them sitewide. See the CSS Menu Frameset [offline], and the Table Menu Frameset [offline].

Completed a splash page for the whole site which is now the index file. You can choose between the page versions there.

Minor fixes and changes throughout the whole site which included a few spelling errors and improved XHTML compatibility.

6/25/01: Finished a large amount of sitewide cleanup which included improved CSS and some troublesome <meta> tags. I am going to once again move on to content.

Real upgrades and improvements to site’s splash page (index.html) which included a large CSS conversion.

The ‘Web Pages’ section is now online.

Registered with Lycos and HotBot.

6/26/01: Completed a page that includes information on all the most popular browsers. I am attempting to archive older versions of browsers so I can add them to this page (as a resource for web designers). If you have one that is not listed on that page and you are willing to send it my way please contact me to make arrangements. ~ webmaster

Several pages added to the links section.

A few more minor CSS revisions throughout the site.

6/29/01: The first addition to the ‘Tutorials’ section has been made. One of the site’s earlier viewers asked how much time I spent updating multiple versions of the site. The answer is, "as much as I spend updating one version of the site." I do this using Dreamweaver’s library items feature. It allows me to update multiple sections of the site by changing only one page. To explain this further I have created my first tutorial. You can view it here.

I have changed all of the title graphics to look like the Rot3K graphic [now offline] that appears on the index page. I decided that the recent design changed had caused the earlier graphics to appear a little out of place.

I have taken additional steps to remove align="value" tags from the site. They are still there but soon they will all be replaced with CSS. Today I changed all occurances of <div align="center"> </div> to the W3C compliant <div class="classname"> </div>. This will reduce the amount of work that I will face down the road when changes are made in relation to the depricated center tages like the earlier div example and the older <center> </center> tag.

Started working on the information section.

Submitted site to Yahoo, the last of the major search engines that has not yet received our listing request.

6/30/01: The home page for all three versions of the site (this page) has been revised. It should now display better in text based browsers and should also load faster because the tables do not pull any strange stunts. Important information and old news on the site will be found on the table to the right and the usual updates will remain in this location. Ever 15-40 days I will remove most of the updates from this page and place them in an archives page.

I have prepared the form for the search engine, I simply need to finish the Perl script.
